Essential Services Archive

Overview

On August 16, 2001, the Skills Development and Labour Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 18) amended Section 72 Essential services of the BC Labour Relations Code to include K-12 public education as an essential service. The legislation maintained teachers’ and support employees’ right to strike and to bargain collectively; however, it gave the Minister of Labour the right to direct the Labour Relations Board to designate essential services in the event that job action threatens educational programs. This section of the members only site provides tools, decisions and related resources to support boards in implementing this provision of the Labour Relations Code.
